The Pumas of Patagonia

Updated: Oct 26, 2023

Last February 2023, in the heart of Chilean Patagonia, we embarked on an unforgettable journey that will forever be etched in our memories. It all began with an early morning wake-up call at our campsite near Laguna Azul. With steaming mugs of coffee in hand, our group of ten adventurers eagerly set out on a 4x4 excursion with experienced guides, tracing the rugged outskirts of Torres del Paine National Park.

As we ventured deeper into the wilderness, our patience was rewarded with a breathtaking sight. Against the backdrop of the still-dark sky, the first light of dawn gently bathed the snowy peaks, illuminating the silhouette of a puma family perched atop a distant ridge. Their forms stood out against the canvas of Laguna Amarga, and we could even make out the thick, elegant tails that set them apart.

From our vantage point, we observed their social interactions through binoculars and savored the moment.

The air was crisp and the morning was cold, with just a few clouds punctuating the sky. As the world around us transformed into shades of orange during the golden hour, we decided to get closer. With utmost caution, we began tracking the pumas on foot. Remarkably, these magnificent creatures seemed at ease in our presence, at times coming within a mere 20 meters of us. They communicated with each other, their calls resonating through the crisp air. The backdrop of snowy peaks and the alarm calls of their common prey, the guanacos, created a scene straight out of a wildlife documentary.

Our journey led us around a ridge, where we encountered a small, pristine pond. Patiently, we waited for the pumas to descend and quench their thirst. First, the mother and then her cub approached the water. Their interaction was a sight to behold as the rising sun bathed them in its warm glow. We watched in awe as they indulged in playful games of hide-and-seek, their affectionate bond on full display amidst the Patagonian grass.

After their captivating performance, they gracefully ascended a ridge and came within a few meters of other photographers. A simple glance from these majestic creatures was enough to leave an indelible mark on our souls. Then, with the same elegance they had displayed throughout our encounter, they disappeared into the horizon, likely seeking a place to rest during the day before embarking on their nightly hunting adventure.

This encounter with the pumas in their natural habitat was nothing short of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Among our group, which included a seasoned safari guide from Botswana, Justin, who had witnessed countless wildlife spectacles in Africa, this encounter was deemed a favorite. The majestic creatures, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Patagonia's hills, lakes, and colors, made it a truly remarkable experience.

These big cats have their space here, and they seem content in their habitat. It's our responsibility to respect and protect their extraordinary world. With our hearts full of gratitude, we returned to Laguna Azul, where cold beers awaited us, and we savored a barbecue feast in the heart of the land we now affectionately call Patagonia.
